What Are Artisan Keycaps? Handcrafted Custom Keycaps, Explained
An artisan keycap is a handcrafted, individually made keycap – usually hand-cast in resin and finished by hand – designed to replace a single key on a mechanical keyboard as a miniature work of art. Where ordinary keycaps are mass-produced by the thousand in plastic moulds, an artisan keycap is sculpted, cast, and painted one at a time, in small limited runs, by independent makers and studios.
The result is a tiny sculpture you actually type on – a centerpiece for your keyboard, most often placed on the Esc or Enter key.
How artisan keycaps differ from regular keycaps
Standard keycaps are injection-moulded from ABS or PBT plastic and sold in full sets. Artisan keycaps are different in three ways: they are made by hand (sculpted, cast, and hand-painted), produced in limited quantities, and made to be decorative – a single statement key rather than a whole set.

Jelly Key is a small studio in Vietnam that has been handcrafting artisan keycaps in limited runs since 2015. Every keycap begins as an idea – a coral reef, a tiny landscape, a scene from a story – and is brought to life by our artists through sculpting, casting, and patient hand-painting.
We do not print or stamp our designs; each piece is shaped and coloured by human hands, which is why no two are ever exactly alike. Our goal is simple: to protect your keyboard and spark a little joy every time you look down at it.
How Are Artisan Keycaps Made?
Making an artisan keycap is a slow, multi-step craft:
- Sketch & design – the concept, colours, and details are planned on paper.
- Sculpt a master – the shape is hand-sculpted, then used to create a silicone mould.
- Hand-cast in resin – coloured resin is poured layer by layer; fine details and embedded elements are added by hand.
- Finish – once cured, each keycap is demoulded, trimmed, polished, and often hand-painted.
- Quality check – every piece is inspected before it earns the Jelly Key name.
This is why artisan keycaps take time and are made in limited numbers – there are no shortcuts to handmade.

Because artisan keycaps are handmade in small batches, they are sold differently from regular keyboard gear:

How to Install and Care for Your Artisan Keycap
Installing is easy: use a keycap puller to remove the key you want to replace, line up the artisan keycap with the switch stem, and press it gently into place.
To keep it looking its best, wipe it with a soft, dry cloth, avoid harsh chemicals, and keep it out of long, direct sunlight to protect the colours. Treated well, a resin artisan keycap will stay vivid for years.
