What Are Artisan Keycaps? Handcrafted Custom Keycaps, Explained
An artisan keycap is a handcrafted, individually made keycap – usually hand-cast in resin and finished by hand – designed to replace a single key on a mechanical keyboard as a miniature work of art. Where ordinary keycaps are mass-produced by the thousand in plastic moulds, an artisan keycap is sculpted, cast, and painted one at a time, in small limited runs, by independent makers and studios.
What you get is a tiny sculpture you actually type on, the centrepiece of your keyboard, and it usually goes on the Esc or Enter key.
How Artisan Keycaps Differ From Regular Keycaps
Standard keycaps are injection-moulded from ABS or PBT plastic and sold in full sets. An artisan keycap is different in three ways. It is made by hand, sculpted and cast and painted. It comes in limited quantities. And it is decorative, one key that says something rather than a whole set that matches.
Most artisan keycaps fit the Cherry MX (+) stem found on the majority of mechanical keyboards, and that is what Jelly Key casts by default. A few designs also get a Topre version for HHKB and Realforce boards, and when one does, the product page says so. Check that page before you order.
Size matters as much as the stem. Most designs are a 1u key, the size of a normal letter key, and some series also come in the wider 2.25u sizes that sit on Enter or left Shift. Across our catalogue the keycaps run from 1u through 7u and cover the Cherry, SA, OEM and Cubic profiles.

Jelly Key is a small studio in Vietnam that has been handcrafting artisan keycaps in limited runs since 2015. Every keycap begins as an idea – a coral reef, a tiny landscape, a scene from a story – and is brought to life by our artists through sculpting, casting, and patient hand-painting.
Every one of our custom keycaps is cast and painted by hand in the same studio. We don’t print or stamp our designs. Each keycap is shaped and colored by human hands, which is why no two come out exactly alike. What we want from it is small. A keyboard you like looking down at.
How Are Artisan Keycaps Made?
Making an artisan keycap is a slow, multi-step craft:
- Sketch & design – the concept, colors, and details are planned on paper.
- Sculpt a master – the shape is hand-sculpted, then used to create a silicone mould.
- Hand-cast in resin – colored resin is poured layer by layer; fine details and embedded elements are added by hand.
- Finish – once cured, each keycap is demoulded, trimmed, polished, and often hand-painted.
- Quality check – every piece is inspected before it earns the Jelly Key name.
That is why artisan keycaps take time and come in limited numbers. Handmade doesn’t have a shortcut.
How Much Do Artisan Keycaps Cost?
There is no one price, because the size of the key and the size of the run decide it. At Jelly Key a single 1u artisan keycap usually falls between $30 and $50. A wider key costs more, since a 2.25u Enter or left Shift takes more resin and more time at the bench, and a full collection of a series costs more again than one key out of it. How to Buy Artisan Keycaps
Because artisan keycaps are handmade in small batches, they are sold differently from regular keyboard gear:
- Group buys – you reserve a keycap during an open window, then the whole run is made to order. Production usually takes 50 to 90 days, and this is the most common way to get artisan keycaps.
- Raffles & limited drops – highly sought-after designs are released in tiny quantities through a raffle or timed sale.
- In-stock releases – pieces that are already cast, painted and boxed, dispatched within about 7 days.

How to Install and Care for Your Artisan Keycap
Installing one is easy. Use a keycap puller to lift off the key you want to replace, line the artisan keycap up with the switch stem, and press it gently into place.
To keep it looking its best, wipe it with a soft, dry cloth, avoid harsh chemicals, and keep it out of long, direct sunlight to protect the colors. Treated well, a resin artisan keycap will stay vivid for years.
