In the digital age, where everything is just a touch away, the world of gaming has become incredibly diverse and captivating. Yet, amidst the myriad of choices, Tetris still holds a special place in the hearts of many. We at Jelly Key understand this. We grew up with Tetris, and the childhood memories of this classic puzzle game remain vivid. That’s why, with all due respect, Jelly Key has recreated Tetris in the most authentic way possible, from visuals to the overall feel.

In 2016, driven by a burning passion for Tetris, our artisans began crafting the first experimental version by hand, piece by piece, with meticulousness and patience. The goal was to achieve small, square blocks that fit perfectly together to form the keycap shape. However, in this early version, the blocks often became distorted after being cut, and after hundreds of hours of work, we could only create one complete keycap. But when I looked at the final product, I still felt dissatisfied. The squares were not uniform, the transparency was inconsistent, and the 3D effect wasn’t quite what we had envisioned. At that time, the technology wasn’t advanced enough to create the separate, equal-sized small squares needed to reproduce the unique 3D effect we had dreamed of. And so, the dream had to be put on hold…

At the end of last year, We was determined to revisit the project. With current technology finally meeting our meticulous requirements, we could achieve the precise size of each small square block, the depth, and the moderate transparency of the keycap body. In this new design, we’ve created uniform small square blocks, and their arrangement, based on each keycap profile, is carefully calculated in 3D space.

We didn’t stop at just the 1u keycap size; we extended the design to 2.25u and 6.25u keycaps. This presented a real challenge in aligning the blocks inside and on the outer surfaces of the keycaps. Ensuring that they are perfectly aligned, equal to the surface, and fit within the diagonal and curved lines required us to design each individual block with completely different curvatures and thicknesses. This complexity was essential to ensure that nothing extended beyond the keycap framework, while also maintaining a standard profile for excellent daily use.

Each keycap in this collection is made with the highest level of LED transparency we’ve ever achieved. It looks transparent, but not entirely, allowing just enough light from the LED beneath to create a subtle, blurred effect on the keycap design. This brings a whole new experience to artisan keycap enthusiasts.

A meticulous, handcrafted production process

This is the first time I decided to record the entire process of assembling the pieces into a 6.25u spacebar keycap, so you can see it from the perspective of a Jelly Key artist. The whole assembly took about 4 hours, but thanks to the timelapse, the video is condensed to about 4 minutes. And remember, this is just the assembly part

Creating a complete Terix keycap set at Jelly Key involves an incredibly complex and meticulous production process. It’s worth emphasizing that all the keycaps we produce are entirely handmade. This process is vastly different from keycaps that are 3D printed, painted, and then coated with a layer of transparent resin. The effort involved in handcrafting these keycaps is immense.

We start by creating molds with 284 separate pieces and mixing resin with over 48 different colors, along with four distinct effects. Each detail must be cast quickly before the resin solidifies. After 16 hours in a pressure cooker to achieve perfect hardness, we remove each block from the mold and manually process the surface. Any piece with bubbles or a bad shape is discarded. This painstaking process is repeated piece by piece until we have enough parts for one keycap.

Here are the three cores of the Terix keycaps, designed with spaces left for attaching the colored blocks. We made them in gray and filled in the empty spaces during the design process to visualize how it would all come together. This helped us ensure the correct number of blocks and the right amount of internal space. Designing and adjusting the position and depth of each block was quite a challenge, but the result is truly amazing.

After casting, each detail is carefully selected and inspected for color and effect. The sorting process, done entirely by hand, is a significant challenge. Similarly, when assembling the keycap, each brick block must fit perfectly, and sometimes further processing is required to achieve the correct fit. Each block is carefully assembled, ensuring the correct color, and fixed with UV resin. Finally, the entire outer layer is poured, requiring another 16 hours to cure. We then go through six more steps to finish the outer surface of the keycap, completing the final Terix keycap, provided it passes the QC process.

If you’re a fan of the Terix game, a mechanical keyboard enthusiast, or simply looking for a unique product to enhance your keyboard, Terix keycaps are the perfect choice for you.
