In the first story of Born of forest, Johan was in fact, born of the forest. After dropping like a stone, he landed on the ground in the middle of this mystical woodland. Something as bright as torch flame flashed through the vines and trees, followed by a giant shadow of darkness.
Johan was born of forest
Johan woke up a few hours later, feeling dizzy and disoriented. Where he was standing stretched through an endless grass field amid a magnificent rolling forest. In the distance, the towering rock mountains were covered by snow. Beyond the grass, the area was surrounded by pine trees. A house – that’s exactly what he’s finding, which nestled peacefully by the edge, fell asleep soundly in the dark. He looked up to the sky and saw a strange glowing band of cloud arching over him.
“What a beautiful Milky Way!” a familiar voice said. “Welcome to Godka Valley where it is born of forest, Johan.”
Ever since he was dropped straight into Godka Valley, Johan has fallen in love with this magical place. The forest where he is living holds powerful sources of charm within itself. It keeps giving him more and more adventures to uncover every day. Used to be a man that sat in a local bar full of strangers, Johan now becomes a curiosity-filled natural dweller who always yearns for voyages of exploration deep into the forest.
What did he hear?
His perseverance finally pays off. While Johan is on his adventurous mission, he makes a startling discovery. He finds a little woodland hidden inside this giant forest, which, even more amazing than the valley itself, has the ability to **listen**. Now Johan has found another reason to spend the rest of his life in this magnificent forest filled with rustic scenes of trees and mountains stretching along the way.
This woodland appears while Johan is about to get lost while wandering around in the forest on a rainy day. The heavy rain impairs his vision, steering the soaked man into another path that’s different from the one that he used to take to go back home. As soon as he enters the woodland, the leaves start rustling through the breezy wind and turn upside down. It looks as if the trees are greeting him! This welcome begins to get even more fascinating when he tries bowing down as a nice gesture to greet them back: all the pine tree bodies make a similar bending position even though they are made of wood!
The trees do talk
Johan couldn’t stand appropriately after witnessing that scene. His body shakes and he falls to the ground with mere astonishment. Pulling himself together after a few minutes, Johan is back to reality and realizes he is lost and can’t find his way home. He suddenly comes up with a crazy idea, “If the trees can feel my presence, maybe they can also hear me?” Thinking he doesn’t really have any other choice, Johan decides just to go with it.
Without a second thought, he reaches his hands up and shouts in the middle of the woodland: “Can you help me find the way home? I’m lost!”
Immediately all the tree leaves turn to another colour, forming themselves into a red arrow and opening up a way out for Johan. He is no doubt amazed by that, rushing to the exit path that leads to his home without forgetting to say thanks and goodbye to the forest.
…and listens!
After coming back home safe and sound, Johan couldn’t stop thinking about that little magical woodland. He finally has a friend in this vast Godka Valley, but more shocking, it’s not a human! Nature has been treating Johan very specially, and now he gets the most precious gift of all – friendship. Ever since he’s found the hearing forest, Johan keeps coming back every day. Not just for a way to find interaction amid this massive field but also for peace of his mind.
Johan talks, it listens, and it talks back. What a mesmerizing forest to live in!
How we grow seeds and plant trees to make a forest that listens
Now it’s time to dive into how these wildly beautiful forests are created.
Everything starts with the base
Casting the base properly plays an important role in defining the whole’s keycap shape. We cast the base entirely in blocks with 2 separate layers between the wooden boxes and the mountains. Each of these layers needs to dry completely so that they can be ready for the next step.
Little details that matter
After preparing the “soil”, we move on to sow the “seeds” to grow them into trees for the forest! We customize the mountains’ surface according to four seasons so each mountain will have a different scene. The soil grounds, rivers, and trees also reflect changes in the seasons, making the colouring process very time-consuming. These tiny pieces of trees, houses, rock mountains are cast in 8-10 hours and condensed to an incredibly small size. Arranging multiple types of trees in different sizes ranging from 2.5 to 4mm is such an interesting step to create a magical forest at the foot of the mountain. Even though it takes a lot of time, the final work is completely worth it!
Now let’s paint the forest!
For colouring the complex details and the wooden frame at the keycap’s bottom, we apply the method of colour mixing by hand-painting and airbrush painting to create a more highlighted effect on the pieces, especially for the river and distinctive designs of the four seasons.
