With Cherry and SA profiles, parts of the dragon’s body and head protrude from the keycaps, adding a vivid touch, especially to the Spacebar. Each size features a unique dragon design, which was a nightmare during the modelling process. However, the final result is stunning when the complete set of dragon keycaps is mounted on a keyboard.
As you may know, the Cherry profile presents a real challenge for artisan keycaps due to the limited space for crafting and creating effects. However, this time, I have implemented a new EDEN casting technique, which reduces the height of the colour bursts and optimises the dragon’s size, making the 1u Cherry dragon version more perfect than ever.
Here’s an extra tip: using a magnifying glass or macro photography, you’ll notice an outer transparent layer with a unique shape. This layer enhances the dragon’s visual appeal and grandeur while protecting details like claws, horns, and the head. I’ve tested these keycaps rigorously, and they withstand rough handling without any damage.
And I’m most proud of the spacebar in this design. It’s phenomenal. With the ample space of the spacebar, I boldly crafted three complex, nearly 180-degree curves along the dragon’s body. The 3D effect that emerges beyond the surface of the spacebar exceeded all expectations. I’m keeping one of these spacebars for myself for this dragon year.
The Dragon of Eden series is one of the most beloved artisan keycap collections among Jelly Key customers. If you’re unfamiliar with this series, let’s review the previously released collections and explore the wonders of this new collection.
The journey of the dragons began in 2019 with the first Dragon of Eden model, featuring the unique EDEN colour effect, making the dragons appear as if they were soaring through the sky. With their mystical beauty and power, the image of the Asian dragon has become one of Jelly Key’s favourite characters, inspiring our artisans to create intricate and complex sculpting techniques in this collection.
In the latest release of this series, the Jelly Key design team has been constantly researching and exploring books, movies, and online materials, as well as based on ancient relics and historical sites… about the history of mythical dragons in Asian culture. Our artisans have achieved a completely new design, with each dragon pose meticulously sculpted on each keycap size, along with the delicately controlled Eden effect, bringing incredible vibrancy.
The process of creating these beautiful dragons is far from simple.
Jelly Key artisans have to meticulously cast the resin of each dragon detail with a combination of 52 different colours, taking 8 to 16 hours for each keycap. Intricate details like sharp horns, claws, and dragon scales require special techniques to keep them fixed in the mould. A thin layer of clear resin is applied to protect each detail and increase the gloss of the keycap. Next, the ink colour will be distributed to create the Eden effect with different positions on each keycap size. This is the step that determines the perfect beauty of this effect. If an error occurs, the artisan must start over from the beginning. This process usually takes 2-4 hours for each drop of ink to fall naturally and 24 hours for the resin to dry completely, shaping the keycap.
Eden Dragon is available for the first time on the Cherry profile
The special feature of this series is the first appearance of the Eden dragon on the Cherry profile. The combination of aesthetics and practicality of the Cherry profile allows you to clearly admire every detail on the dragon’s body, from the scales, mane to the dragon’s head with just a 3mm size attached to the pair of horns and super small fangs. Each delicate dragon scale is less than 1mm wide, demonstrating Jelly Key’s incredible meticulousness. Although the size is more limited than the SA profile, the 1u keycap on the Cherry profile still exudes the inherent elegance of the Dragon of Eden keycap line.
The final stages…
Unlike other makers who use 3D printing and painting technology, Jelly Key creates dragons through a complex multi-layer casting technique, resulting in completely handcrafted, sharp details. Polishing the keycap after removing it from the mold is also a big challenge with a keycap surface that is neither flat nor curved, including corners, the transparent layer surrounding the dragon, and the hard-to-define curve of the ripples. All are sanded through 4 different levels of sandpaper and polished twice by machine to achieve the highest level of finish.
The most realistic beauty
When you hold it in your hand, you will see the incredibly realistic beauty of the dragon scales shimmering under the thin layer of clear resin, helping to increase durability during use, protecting small details such as horns and dragon claws, as well as bringing visual effects from multiple viewing angles. It’s hard for photos to capture the three-dimensionality, gloss, and contrast of the many distinct color layers that are meticulously cast. The height of each Eden color layer is also controlled so as not to obscure the overall design, keeping the dragon always the focal point on all keycap sizes.
